Coming off the box office success of The Fate of the Furious, it seems that Sony and Amblin have identified F. Gary Gray as the man to launch its Men in Black spinoff, with Deadline reporting that the Straight Outta Compton helmer is now in talks with the studio.
Sony has been looking to reboot the franchise since the release of Men in Black 3 back in 2012, even going so far as to develop a crossover with the 21 Jump Street franchise. However, the plan now is to produce a reboot which will “acknowledge and build on the world” of the previous movies, albeit with new characters and a more global scale.
Matt Holloway and Art Marcum (Iron Man) have written the script for the reboot, which will see Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald back as producers and Steven Spielberg executive producing. Neither Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones are expected to return, as the aim is to relaunch the franchise with a new cast, a la Jurassic World.
The as-yet-untitled Men in Black reboot is set to open on June 14th 2019.
