Earlier this month it was reported that director Todd Phillips (The Hangover) has identified Joaquin Phoenix as his choice to play the Clown Prince of Crime in Warner Bros.’ standalone DC movie exploring the origin of the iconic Batman villain The Joker.
Well, it seems that is news to Phoenix, who played down the report when asked by Allocine (via The Playlist) about the film, responding with “What movie about the Joker? I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
It should be noted that the original report stated that talks were yet to get underway, so it’s possible that Phoenix simply doesn’t want to comment on the story until the ink has dried on his deal (or until Warner Bros. has officially announced his casting). By the same token, he could well be telling the truth, and that the interview was the first he’d heard about the project.
Phillips is directing The Joker movie from a script he’s written with Scott Silver (The Fighter), and Martin Scorsese executive producing. Production is apparently due to begin in May, so it shouldn’t be too long until we get confirmation as to who’ll be donning the white face paint.
