Ryan Coogler considered having Patriot appear in Black Panther

February 1, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Director of Black Panther, Ryan Coogler, apparently considered including the Marvel character Patriot in the movie.

Black Panther is proving to be one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year with the film apparently tracking tremendously well at the box office in terms of advanced tickets.

The film, however, might have looked a little bit different had Ryan Coogler went in another direction and included the film debut of Elijah Bradley, a.k.a Patriot.

“Crazy enough, for comic book fans, we toyed with the character Patriot for a little bit,” Coogler explained to CinemaBlend. “Early on we were interested to get our hands on him, Joe [Robert Cole] and I, but that ended up going away so we could focus on Wakanda a little more.”

It’s unclear what Marvel thought of the idea of including the character and if they would have agreed to having Patriot show up should Coogler have opted to include him.

Patriot is a character that found his debut in Young Avengers, being the descendant of Isiah Bradley, who was one of the first to survive the Super Soldier procedure that Captain America went through, providing Patriot with similar abilities.

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

Black Panther sees Ryan Coogler (Creed) directing Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa alongside Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Sterling K. Brown as N’Jobu, JoOhn Kani as King T’Chaka and Nabiyah Be as Nightshade. The film is set for release on February 12th in the UK and on February 16th in the States.
