After yesterday’s reveal of the teaser poster, Sony has now released the first trailer for Venom, the Spider-Man spin-off starring Tom Hardy (Dunkirk) as the fan favourite anti-hero. Watch the trailer below…
Venom is based on one of Spider-Man’s most well known villains/anti-heroes. Photographer Eddie Brock came into contact with the alien symbiote that had previously infected Spidey, gaining much of his spider powers and an invulnerability to his Spider-Sense. Sharing an intense hatred for both Spider-Man and Peter Parker, Eddie and the symbiote became Venom, swearing revenge on Spidey for ruining his life. Venom has also become an anti-hero, taking on the worst criminals and often coming into conflict with the other symbiote villain, Carnage.
The film is set to take its inspiration from the comic book story arcs Venom: Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes. As yet, there’s been no word on an official synopsis for the movie.
While Venom is a spin-off from Spider-Man, it will only be in the loosest sense as it will not connect with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, at least according to Marvel’s head honcho Kevin Feige. However, a recent rumour suggested current Spider-Man actor Tom Holland may cameo in the film.
Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Venom is set for release on October 5th 2018 and features a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson, Jenny Slate, Reid Scott and Scott Haze.
