Fans of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow have been calling for a solo movie for the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and Avenger for several years now, and after the news back in January that Marvel had hired a screenwriter, it seems that one may finally be on the horizon.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight during its Avengers: Infinity War set visit, Johansson was asked whether she’s interested in the solo movie (which she presumably is, considering it will reportedly make her the highest paid actress in Hollywood), and what she’d like to see in it:
“I think that there is a… (laughs) it’s such a loaded question,” said Johansson. “Yes, I would want to in the right context and for the film to fit where I’m at, where I am in my life. I mean I’ve played this character for a long time. It’s been probably like 8 years or more, and so much has happened in my life, my life as a performer and happened in my life personally.”
“I love playing this character, and I think there is definitely an opportunity to explore the Widow as a woman who has kind of come into her own and is making independent and active choices for herself probably for once in her life,” she continued. “You know she hasn’t always had that possibility so if it fit that criteria then yes I would want to do it.”
Given that female-led superhero movies are big business in the wake of Wonder Woman, it would seem a good bet that Marvel will be looking to capitalise with a Black Widow film as part of its Phase Four plans. First up however we have the Brie Larson-headlined Captain Marvel, which is set for release next year, while Johansson’s Black Widow will be back for next month’s Avengers: Infinity War, along with its as-yet-untitled sequel.
