Despite getting to assemble Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on two occasions with 2012’s The Avengers and 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, director Joss Whedon has admitted to THR that he’s “a little jealous” over the wealth of characters available to Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
“I’m less tired, and excited because I don’t know what happens, and you know, a little jealous,” said Whedon when asked how Infinity War feels compared to his two Avengers films. “[The Russos] got the Guardians in there, and every living human being who wasn’t in a Harry Potter movie is in this film. I don’t envy them the gig – there’s a reason I said two and out – but I do wish I had gotten to play with those characters a little bit.”
Whedon of course did get to play with another iconic group of superheroes, taking over from Zack Snyder as director on last year’s DC ensemble Justice League, and was set for another return to the DC universe on Batgirl, only to drop out after failing to crack the story.
