With Game of Thrones set to come to an end next year with its eighth and final season, HBO has been developing a number of potential spinoffs set in the world of Westeros, and now the first of those has received a pilot order from the cable network.
The as-yet-untitled series has been created by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Golden Circle) and A Song of Ice and Fire creator George R.R. Martin, and takes place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones.
The potential series will chronicle “the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”

HBO has a further four spinoffs in development, and the network’s president of programming Casey Bloys has previously said we should expect “around one” to make it to the screen, although there remains the possibility of more. However, it’s not expected that any spinoffs will arrive until at least a year after Game of Thrones wraps up in 2019.
