Back in May, Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed that they hoped the long-rumoured sequel to the 2009 comedy-horror would make it into cinemas in 2019, and now the project has just taken a major step towards achieving that goal.
Variety is reporting that Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin are all on board to reprise their roles from the first movie, which will reunite them with Zombieland helmer Ruben Fleischer.
“This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time – and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse, and Abigail,” said Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures. “These are some of the most in-demand actors and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing.”
Although specific plot details are being kept under wraps, Zombieland 2 “will be set in a world in which zombie slayers must face off against many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors.”
Filming on Zombieland 2 is set to get underway in October following the release of Fleischer’s latest film Venom, with the movie slated to arrive in October 2019, marking the tenth anniversary of the first movie.
