There is no doubt that The Dark Knight is one of the most beloved films in the superhero genre. It broke ground in the genre and paved the way for superhero films to be made and taken seriously among critics and the mainstream audience. As fans celebrate the 10th anniversary of the film’s release today, Warner Bros. has announced the film will get a special IMAX 70mm re-release to commemorate the milestone beginning August 24 for a week.
WB’s President of Domestic Distribution Jeff Goldstein made the announcement today. Christopher Nolan had made it a goal to film using IMAX cameras and shot a good portion of The Dark Knight in IMAX and helped revolutionize the format for modern films. He has used IMAX cameras on all his films since, most prominentally Interstellar and Dunkirk while Marvel shot Avengers: Infinity War entirely on IMAX.
The only unfortunate aspect of The Dark Knight‘s re-release is that it will play in four IMAX locations: AMC Citywalk in Universal City, CA, AMC Lincoln Square in New York, AMC Metreon in San Francisco and the Ontario Place Cinesphere in Toronto. Tickets will go on sale this Friday.
