Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg discuss Captain Marvel

September 15, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

After working their magic on the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Michael Douglas, Kurt Russell and Michelle Pfeiffer, Marvel’s digital de-aging wizards will next turn their attention to Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg as the duo make their S.H.I.E.L.D. return in the 90s-set Captain Marvel.

Speaking to EW, Jackson has revealed how his ninth outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will feature a very different Nick Fury – and not just in terms of him having two eyes.

“I’ll read something, and I’ll read it as present Nick Fury, and I’ll go, ‘He would never do this,’” said Jackson. “And I go, ‘Oh, wait a minute. He’s not in that place yet.’ The Nick Fury we meet is sort of a bureaucrat in an interesting sort of way.  He hadn’t become jaded or a slave to the cynicism that we normally see. He sort of respects the people that are above him, more so than the Nick Fury that people are used to.”

Jackson went on to reveal that his meeting with Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers will set him off on the path to the Nick Fury we’ve come to know and love:

“This is a mind-changing, attitude-changing moment for him that leads him to become the person that we know. He [now] understands that there are these other things out there. He understands that they’re not all enemies, and we do need to find allies who have specific kinds of skills that humans don’t have. And trying to convince people above him is a difficult task because they haven’t seen it or experienced it.”

Meanwhile, Clark Gregg also spoke about his big screen return as Phil Coulson – his first since the character’s “death” in 2012’s The Avengers:

“There was something really special about going back to the early days when he was just kind of coming up the ranks,” states Gregg. “I had to take innocence workshops and go back to when he was a little less crusty and jaded! He’s a relatively new S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who is obsessed with MC Hammer and dresses just like him, and it makes Fury so angry. The genie pants don’t really go with the Armani.”

Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), McKenna Grace (Gifted), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
