Monumental Pictures is in development on a biopic based upon the life of Amy Winehouse, having signed a deal with the family of the late British singer.
The Wrap reports that Geoff Deane (Kinky Boots) is working on a script for the project, which is planned to go into production in 2019 with all proceeds from the film going to the Amy Winehouse Foundation,a charity working to prevent the effects of alcohol and drug misuse. Monumental Pictures’ Alison Owen and Debra Hayward are on board to produce.
“We now feel able to celebrate Amy’s extraordinary life and talent,” said Amy’s father Mitch Winehouse. “And we know through the Amy Winehouse Foundation that the true story of her illness can help so many others who might be experiencing similar issues. With Alison and Debra we have found fantastic British producers who understand what Amy meant to people, alongside an illustrious history of bringing amazing female driven stories to the big screen.”
“We’re proud that Mitch Winehouse has entrusted us with the story of amazing Amy, an icon whose songs have provided the soundtrack to a generation,” added Hayward and Owen.
Amy Winehouse followed up her debut album Frank with 2006’s Back to Black, which shot her to international fame and saw her honoured with five Grammy Awards. However, the singer also battled drug and alcohol addiction, and passed away of alcohol poisoning aged just 27 in 2011.
