Having cast their leads to star alongside Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, DC Films and director Cathy Yan are now assembling the crew for Birds of Prey. Speaking to GMA, A Star is Born and Venom cinematographer Matthew Libatique has revealed that he has joined the project, which may well be in for a title change.
“I’m in preparation on a film currently called Birds of Prey,” he said. “It’s probably going to have a different title. It’s with Warner Bros. and the director is Cathy Yan. Who directed a film called Dead Pigs which is a Chinese film. I’m excited. It’s, in the superheroes genre but this time it’s in the DC universe, not the Marvel universe. Margot Robbie is set to star and I’m excited for that. And then it has a little bit of origin story in it, so it makes it intriguing and it’s very early though, so early discussions.”

Two things to note here: firstly, Libatique’s appointment debunks the frankly ridiculous rumour from earlier this year that Warner Bros. and DC Films were looking to employ an entirely female crew for the movie; and secondly, given that the film is being built around Robbie’s Harley Quinn – a character who isn’t part of the Birds of Prey in the comic books – a title change certainly wouldn’t be too surprising (Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey, anyone?).
Filming on Birds of Prey is slated to begin early in the New Year, with Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) starring alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (The Huntress), Jurnee Smolett-Bell (Black Canary) and Rosie Perez (Renee Montoya). It is set for release on February 7th 2020.
