Margot Robbie wanted for live-action Barbie movie

October 6, 2018 by Gary Collinson

With Sony’s option on Barbie expiring earlier in the year, Deadline is reporting that the long-gestating big screen adaptation of the Mattel toy line may be set for another lease of life at Warner Bros.

According to the site, the Suicide Squad and I, Tonya star is in early talks to take on the title role in a live-action movie, which will be an entirely new project without any involvement from Amy Pascal, Laurie Macdonald and Walter Parkes, who were on board as producers when the property was at Sony.

Sony’s plans for Barbie would have seen a fish-out-of-water type story, where Barbie is kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough and sets out on a journey into the real world where she discovers that perfection comes on the inside.

Deadline’s report states that it’s unclear whether Warner Bros. and Mattel will be sticking to the same story for the new take, and also notes that Robbie is yet to officially sign on to the project. Both Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were previously attached to star.
