As he prepares to return to the Danger Zone in Top Gun: Maverick, Empire has revealed that Tom Cruise has enlisted his frequent collaborator and Mission: Impossible – Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie to rewrite the screenplay for the sequel to the 80s classic.
Top Gun: Maverick will mark the tenth time that Cruise and McQuarrie have worked together, beginning in 2008 with Valkyrie and also includes Jack Reacher, Edge of Tomorrow, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and The Mummy.

McQuarrie is set to rewrite a script originally penned by Justin Marks (The Jungle Book), while Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion) directs.

It is set for release on June 26th 2020.
