Rumours have been circulating for months, but now it is official: filmmaker Scott Derrickson has closed his deal to return to the director’s chair for Doctor Strange 2, reuniting with leading man Benedict Cumberbatch for the sequel to the Sorcerer Supreme’s 2016 solo movie.
According to THR, the search is underway for a writer to pen the script for Doctor Strange 2, with Marvel hoping to then begin production on the film int the spring of 2020 for release in May 2021.
Marvel Studios has been very quiet when it comes to its post-Avengers: Endgame plans, although there are a number of movies we know we can expect in Phase Four, beginning with next year’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Ryan Coogler recently closed his own deal to write and direct a sequel to this year’s smash-hit Black Panther, while The Eternals and a Black Widow solo movie are also confirmed, with both expected to shoot in 2019 ahead of 2020 releases. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 also remains on the table, although its status is obviously still up in the air following the departure of director James Gunn.
