UPDATE: As an update to the earlier story, Deadline is reporting that Hart believes that his hosting of the Oscars would detract from the talent being honoured at the ceremony, and as such he won’t be returning to the position. Original story follows…
After a much talked about interview from Kevin Hart on The Ellen Show sources for Variety have suggested that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is open to a return from the comedian as host of this year’s Oscars.
After being selected to host the 2019 Academy Awards, Kevin Hart stood down following backlash due to multiple jokes surfacing from his past, which were both homophobic and controversial. The Oscars has since struggled to find a replacement for the star, and his return could present a suitable solution to the vacancy, although perhaps at the cost of some viewers.
The Variety source claimed that:
“Leadership at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and ABC, the network that broadcasts the telecast, are open to Hart resuming his role as emcee if he signals that he wants the job. That message could come through a spokesperson or on social media, where Hart maintains an active presence on Instagram and Twitter.”
There is a suggestion here that the decision is down to Hart, rather than the Oscars executives. Whether his return would be the correct choice or not is debatable, but the choice seems to very much be in Hart’s hands.
