Last month it was announced that Eddie Murphy is set to reprise the role of Akeem, Crown Prince of Zamunda, for a sequel to the 1988 comedy classic Coming to America, and now comes word that Paramount Pictures has set a release date for the film.
The as-yet-untitled Coming to America 2 will open in North America on August 7th 2020, putting it in competition with an as-yet-unrevealed Warner Bros. title.
Coming to America 2 will reunite Murphy with his Dolemite Is My Name director Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow), with Kenya Barris (Black-ish) rewriting a script from original Coming to America screenwriters Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield.
The film will see Akeem discovering that he has a long lost son and returning to America to meet the unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda. As yet, there’s no word on which of the original film’s stars will be joining Murphy in the sequel, although the plan is said to be to bring back cast members Arsenio Hall (Semmi), Shari Headley (Lisa), John Amos (Mr. McDowell) and James Earl Jones (King Jaffe).
