During the Television Critics Association winter press tour, Fox has officially confirmed that it has renewed the long-running animated series The Simpsons for a 31st and 32nd season.
The show, which surpassed Gunsmoke during its 29th season to become the longest-running primetime scripted show in U.S. television history, will take its episode count through to 713 by the end of its 32nd season in 2021. While its star has faded since its early seasons, the show continues to pull in the viewers with an average audience of 7.5 million per episode.
The renewal isn’t a complete surprise, as it was reported last month that the series was nearing a two-season renewal. However, it was also said that the show may finally come to an end after the 32nd season; Disney will soon take control of the property after the Fox acquisition, and there’s been talk that the House of Mouse could swing the axe in order to put an end to existing broadcast syndication deals.
