Although talk of a new film resurfaces every couple of years, it seems we’re no closer to another Gremlins movie than we’ve been at any point since the release of Gremlins 2: The New Batch back in 1990.
However, it seems that Warner Bros. is looking to revisit the property for its upcoming WarnerMedia streaming service, with Variety reporting that development is underway on a Gremlins animated series.
According to the site, the potential series would serve as a prequel to the first movie and focus on a young Mr. Wing (the owner of the Chinatown store in the first movie) and his early adventures with Gizmo.
Tze Chun (Cold Comes the Night, Gotham, Once Upon a Time) is attached as writer and executive producer, while Warner Bros. Television and Amblin Television will produce.
Warner’s as-yet-unnamed streaming platform is expected to launch in 2020, so expect the studio to make full use of its existing library of IPs as it attempts to put together an original content offering to rival Netflix, Disney+ and NBCUniversal when the Streaming Wars really start to heat up.
