Developers of The Witcher video game series, CD Projekt Red, claim to be working on two games that will both be released by 2021. We have been aware of one of these games for quite a while: Cyberpunk 2077 was announced seven years ago and has yet to receive a solid release date, but the other game remains a complete mystery.
A translated blog post on the ResetEra forums claims that the other game will be a “AAA” release. The most likely guess for this unannounced title may be is a new adventure in the Witcher universe. CD Projekt Red have claimed that they will not be entering another numbered sequel into the Witcher franchise: this does not mean that a spin off with similar gameplay to The Witcher 3 is beyond the realms of possibility.
The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker, a spin off card game RPG, was released last year. Maybe the mystery game could be created in a similar style?
The developer’s comment will likely deflate the expectations of anyone who was expecting Cyberpunk to be released this year. Cyberpunk has been in development since CD Projekt Red finished development of the DLC for The Witcher 3.
It seems as though Cyberpunk will be given as much time as it needs if the release date can be anywhere in the next two years. People may have forgotten that the Witcher 3 was delayed for six months back in 2014, and so Cyberpunk could suffer the same fate. Despite this, we can still expect see Cyberpunk 2077 at E3 2019: hopefully with some new trailers or gameplay.
