Having been fired from the project back in July in response to old tweets making jokes about topics such as rape and paedophilia, Deadline is reporting that Disney has now had a change of heart and has reinstated James Gunn as director of the Marvel threequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
According to the site, Walt Disney Studios preisdent Alan Horn had met with Gunn on numerous occasions to discuss the situation following his firing, and having been persuaded by Gunn’s public apology and his handling of the situation the decision has now been made to bring him back into the Guardians fold.
Although names such as Travis Knight (Bumblebee), Adam McKay (Vice) and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) were linked to the movie, Marvel was yet to meet with any other filmmakers about succeeding Gunn in the director’s chair, and planned to use his script for the film, which he completed prior to his dismissal.
Before we get to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn will be dipping his toes into the DC Extended Universe to direct The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros., which is set for release in 2021. He will then move onto Guardians once he completes work on the DC supervillain team-up.
