Game of Thrones made its grand return to HBO this past Sunday as the hugely-anticipated eighth and final season of the epic fantasy series got underway with record-setting viewing figures.
As reported by Deadline, the season eight premiere ‘Winterfell’ pulled in 17.4 million viewers during its live premiere, along with HBOGo and HBO Now. Not only does that put it above the season seven finale ‘The Dragon and the Wolf’ for a series high, but it’s also the all-time biggest premiere ratings for any HBO show in history.

Season eight of Game of Thrones will run for just six episodes, building to its series finale on May 19th. It may not be the last we see of Westeros though, as the cable network is already prepping a pilot for a spinoff series under the working title of The Long Night.
