Avengers: Endgame was originally titled Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet

May 10, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

From the moment that Marvel first changed up its plans for Avengers: Infinity War – Part I and Avengers: Infinity War – Part II, the studio remained tight-lipped about the title for Avengers 4, referring to it simply as Untitled Avengers until the end of the first trailer where we finally got the big Avengers: Endgame reveal.

Earlier this year, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige claimed that Endgame was always going to be the title, but it seems that may not have been the case after all, as directors Anthony and Joe Russo have revealed to the Happy Sad Confused podcast that for “a long time”, the film was going by the title Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet.

Now, if you’d been following Infinity War and Endgame closely during their production, you may recall that Guardians of the Galaxy star Zoe Saldana referred to the latter as Infinity Gauntlet during the premiere of Guardians Vol. 2 back in 2017, although director James Gunn quickly downplayed the incident, suggesting that Saldana was misspeaking and simply confusing Infinity War for Infinity Gauntlet. Riiiiiight.

The Russos never went on to elaborate on the reason for the title change, although we suspect it was likely more to avoid any potential audience confusion with Infinity War rather than Saldana letting it slip early.

Given the plot of Endgame, Infinity Gauntlet would certainly have been an appropriate title had they decided to stick to the original plan. But which do you prefer? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @FlickeringMyth…
