UPDATE: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel is actually looking to shoot Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2020, presumably following production on James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Given how notoriously sketchy Production Weekly is, we’re certainly more inclined to believe THR and its sources. Original story follows…
Now that the whole James Gunn saga is over and the director is officially back on board for Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it’s being reported via Production Weekly that Marvel and Gunn are targeting a February 2021 production start for the cosmic superhero threequel.
The original plan for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – the only other Phase Four Marvel movie to officially be announced after Spider-Man: Far From Home – was for the film to start shooting early this year ahead of a 2020 release. However, those plans went out of the window when Disney fired Gunn due to offensive jokes he made years earlier on Twitter, with Marvel then delaying the movie indefinitely.
Before Gunn returns to the MCU, he’s set to direct Warner Bros. and DC Films’ The Suicide Squad, which is set to shoot this year ahead of an August 2021 release. With that in mind, a February start date for Guardians Vol. 3 seems ambitious, given that he’ll presumably be in full swing on post-production the DCEU movie, so don’t be too surprised if this rumoured date turns out to be a little wide of the mark.
