The Mandalorian star discusses George Lucas’ involvement with the Star Wars series

May 2, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Giancarlo Esposito, one of the stars of The Mandalorian, has detailed George Lucas’ involvement in the TV show.

2019 is shaping up to be a big year for Star Wars and new Disney+ TV series The Mandalorian is going to be a big part of that. One thing that many fans will certainly be pleased to hear is that franchise creator Geoge Lucas has had some involvement in the show.

Speaking about this to Collider, star Giancarlo Esposito, revealed the extent to which Lucas was involved:

“Well you know what’s cool about Mandalorian is you figure a guy who wrote it, who figured it out with George Lucas, would direct every episode. That would be all ego, right? He has amassed some incredible directors from different parts of the planet to give their take on an episode. I find that to be so phenomenal because then we have new and fresh ideas every single episode, coming into this show, that reflect the fans—because the directors are also fans. They’re from Australia, from England, from wherever you are, it reflects their take of their people on how they saw the original and how they’re going to do it as well.”

From these comments, it sounds like creator Jon Favreau was working pretty closely with Lucas in figuring out what the series would be, which is a much bigger involvement than Lucas has had with other recent Star Wars projects.

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

The Mandalorian sees Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) leading a cast that includes Gina Carano (Deadpool), Carl Weathers (Rocky), Nick Nolte (Afflication), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man).
