Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of Avengers: Endgame, have explained what made their spoiler ban necessary.
Spoilers are an ever constant in our lives these days, with so many of our favourite films and TV shows becoming spoiled online before we get a chance to see them. This is an even bigger problem for filmmakers, who don’t want to see a detrimental impact on the success of their movie as a result of the story being leaked.
Of course, you can’t stop spoilers completely but directors like Joe and Anthony Russo have tried everything they can, even putting out a statement to fans, asking for a complete ban on spoiling the film. Speaking to THR, Joe discussed why this was important:
“This is the environment we live in now. We can’t control the internet. It’s its own monster. Whether there’s malicious intent or compulsive intent to reveal story points of pop culture content, we wanted to make sure that we asked for a level of decorum in how all of that was dealt with.”
Anthony added: “We certainly respect the idea that when you see a film, you want to discuss it, you want to talk about it, you want to share your experience. And that’s a really important part of the process. But it’s trying to establish a window where people are given the opportunity to see the film.”

At the end of the day, it seems to come down to respect for the Russos. Talking about movies is wonderful but showing respect to those who haven’t been able to experience the film for themselves goes a long way.
