Black Widow casting and character details confirmed during Marvel’s Comic-Con panel

July 21, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Marvel Studios descended upon Hall H of the San Diego Comic-Con International yesterday to unveil its Phase Four plans for 2020 and 2021.

While much of the news concerned the likes of Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor Love and Thunder and the various Disney+ TV series, Marvel also devoted some time to the Phase Four-launching Black Widow solo film, which has been shooting now for the past month.

In addition to some first look footage (you can find a detailed breakdown over at Den of Geek), it was confirmed that the movie will take place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, with Taskmaster as the main villain, and will explore that red in her ledger that Natasha acquired from her days in Budapest.

Alongside the returning Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, it was confirmed that Florence Pugh (Fighting With My Family) is portraying Yelena Belova, “a sister” figure to Natasha (and, in the comics at least, the second Black Widow), with O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) as Mason, a “fixer” with a romantic interest in Nat, David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Alexei Shostakov, a.k.a. Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) as Melina Vostokoff, a.k.a. Iron Maiden.

Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) also appears as an as-yet-unrevealed character in the film, which is being directed by Cate Shortland (Lore) and will hit cinemas on May 1st 2020.
