Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. has enlisted Dexter Fletcher (Eddie the Eagle, Rocketman) to succeed Guy Ritchie in the director’s chair for Sherlock Holmes 3.
The film will see Robert Downey Jr. reprising the role of the world’s greatest detective, with Jude Law also expected to return as Dr. John Watson. Chris Brancato is writing the script for the threequel, while Susan Downey, Joel Silver, Dan Lin and Lionel Wigram are on board to produce.
The first Sherlock Holmes grossed $524 million back in 2009, with its follow-up Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows topping that two years later with $545 million. Warner Bros. has been actively looking to get a third instalment off the ground for several years now, although Downey’s commitments to the Marvel Cinematic Universe have prevented it from happening until this point.
The as-yet-untitled Sherlock Holmes 3 is set for release on December 21st 2021.
