While last year’s Tomb Raider wasn’t exactly a huge smash at the box office, its $275 million haul has proven enough to warrant a sequel, and now Deadline is reporting that British filmmaker Ben Wheatley (Kill List, Free Fire) has signed on to direct Alicia Vikander’s second outing as video game icon Lara Croft.
Wheatley’s involvement on Tomb Raider 2 shouldn’t perhaps be too surprising given that his wife and frequent collaborator Amy Jump was enlisted back in April to write the script for the sequel. Further details are being kept under wraps at present, but MGM is looking to begin production early in the New Year ahead of a release on March 19th 2021.

Wheatley – whose other credits include the likes of Sightseers, A Field in England and High Rise – is currently in post-production on his latest film, an adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca starring Kristin Scott Thomas, Lily James and Armie Hammer.
