After several years in development, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema has announced that filming is finally underway on the Mortal Kombat reboot, which is being directed by award-winning Australian commercial filmmaker Simon McQuoid, with James Wan (Aquaman) producing.
As well as announcing the start of principal production, New Line has also revealed that Max Huang (Time Raiders) has been cast in the role of Kung Lao, the stuntman and actor joining the previously announced Ludi Lin (Power Rangers) as Liu Kang, Joe Taslim (The Raid) as Sub Zero, Mehcad Brooks (Supergirl) as Jax, Tadanobu Asano (Thor: Ragnarok as Raiden, Jessica McNamee (The Meg) as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson (House of Lies) as Kano, Sisi Stringer (Bloody Hell) as Mileena and Lewis Tan (Wu Assassins).
Based on the hugely successful video game franchise, the Mortal Kombat reboot has been scripted by Greg Russo, who took to social media to commemorate the start of production:
