Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will answer “who is Rey?”, says writer Chris Terrio

October 3, 2019 by Samuel Brace

The answer to the question, “who is Rey?”, will be answered in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker according to the film’s writer Chris Terrio.

The identity of Rey has been one of the biggest questions on everyone’s lips in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Not just in a literal scence of her lineage or ancestry but also in terms of how she has such a strong connection to the force.

Fortunately, this is a question that writer Chris Terrio says Episode IX will answer. In a recent interview with Empire, Terrio spoke about the quesitons that fueled production:

“One of them is a simple one: ‘Who is Rey?’ Which is a question that people not only wonder about quite literally, but wonder about in the spiritual sense. How can Rey become the spiritual heir to the Jedi? We kept coming back to ‘Who is Rey?’, and how can we give the most satisfying answer to that not only factually – because obviously people are interested in whether there’s more to be learned of Rey’s story – but more importantly who is she as a character? How will she find the courage and will and inner strength and power to carry on what she’s inherited?”

Answering these questions will hopefully provide a fantastic foundation with which to base Episode IX around. It’s going to be fascinating to see just what Terrio and Abrams have managed to produce.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on December 19th 2019 in the UK and December 20th 2019 in North America with J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), and Keri Russell (The Americans).
