Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan has revealed that she’s keen to follow in the footsteps of director James Gunn by swapping the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the DC Extended Universe, with the actress revealing that she’d like to direct and star in a Batgirl movie.
“Batgirl would be pretty cool,” said Gillan when asked by Omelete if there were any particular characters she’d like to play. “Batgirl would be cool for [directing] as well! My favorite films in that world are dark, and my favorite one is Dark Knight,” she revealed. “I just love the way that was directed so much so I would love to work in that kind of world as the director.”
As it happens, there may be a vacancy for a Batgirl actress and director, with Warner Bros. and DC Films announcing development on a solo movie back in 2017, initially under The Avengers director Joss Whedon, who stepped away from the project following the poor reception to Justice League (of which he’d overseen reshoots). The last we heard about the potential film was in April 2018 when it was announced that Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson would be writing a script.
Gillan recently made her directorial debut with The Party’s Just Beginning, and will be reuniting with director James Gunn in the near future as she reprise the role of Nebula for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
