Disney is looking to expand its Disney+ output with a prequel series based upon 2017’s Beauty and the Beast; however, it won’t focus on Belle or the Beast, but rather the characters of Gaston and LeFou.
THR confirmed this news, while revealing that Luke Evans and Josh Gad will be reprising their roles as Gaston and LeFou respectively. No other cast members such as Emma Watson and Dan Stevens are expected to feature.
The still-untitled project, which is in early development, is said to be a six-part musical, and has Once Upon a Time creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz serving as showrunners as well as co-writing with Gad. Composer Alan Menken is also in talks to return.
Kitsis, Horowitz and Gad previously worked together to develop the Muppets Live Another Day comedy series for Disney+, which was ultimately scrapped.

Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a live-action re-telling of the studio’s animated classic, which refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. “Beauty and the Beast” is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within.
Beauty and the Beast was directed by Bill Condon and starred Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as Beast, Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, Luke Evans as Gaston, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, Stanley Tucci as Cadenza, Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, Kevin Kline as Maurice, Josh Gad as Le Fou and Audra McDonald as Garderobe.
