The novelisation for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has revealed the morbid truth about Rey’s father.
The revelation that Rey is a Palpatine sent shock waves throughout the fandom, even though some had already predicted it as far back as Episode VII. The news certainly shook Rey to her core – learning your grandfather is the evil Darth Sidious isn’t exactly good news.
Questions where then circulating about Rey’s parents; who were they, and when did Palpatine have children? Well, the novelisation of the movie has revealed the details, explaining that Rey’s father was, in fact, a failed Sith experiment and clone of Palpatine himself!
We know now that Palpatine was brought back thanks to the clone experiments of his loyal Sith Eternal and it seems Rey’s father was part of an earlier insurance policy for the emperor.
The novel describes how the Sith cultists “toiled, splicing genes, bolstering tissue, creating unnatural abominations” hoping that the experiments would succeed in one day housing Palpatine’s immense Dark Side spirit.

Apparently, the Sith Eternal “would do anything, risk anything, sacrifice anything” to create a worthy body for Palpatine.
The experiments failed at first, however, and only one failed clone survived. The novel describes how this “son” was useless and powerless and totally unfit for the Emperor:
“The boy’s only worth would lay in continuing the bloodline through more natural methods”.
From there, this failed experiment would go on to father Rey, before being hunted down by Palpatine and the Sith Eternal.
