Although 2015’s The Last Witch Hunter failed to set the box office on fire, grossing just $147 million worldwide from a $90 million budget, it seems that Lionsgate hasn’t given up its franchise hopes for the Vin Diesel-headlined action fantasy.
Speaking to Collider to promote the release of his latest film Bloodshot [read our review here], Diesel has stated that the studio is actively developing a sequel to The Last Witch Hunter, with a writer on board to pen the script.
““When a Last Witch Hunter comes out and it doesn’t destroy the box office you, under the old thinking, would go, ‘Well, maybe I should focus on something else’. But nowadays what’s fascinating is that movies find you somehow… Lionsgate is coming and saying, ‘We’re putting a writer on for the next one.’ That’s kinda cool! … And this is just recent, by the way. But it’s funny that you mentioned Last Witch Hunter because I’m in a meeting with Lionsgate and they’re actively creating the sequel to The Last Witch Hunter.”
The original film was directed by Breck Eisner (Sahara, The Crazies) and saw Diesel playing Kaulder, a medieval knight cursed with eternal life who works for an ancient order tasked with keeping a true between humans and witches. Also featuring in the cast were Elijah Wood, Rose Leslie, Julie Engelbrecht and Michael Caine.
