Thanks to Vanity Fair, we’ve got our first first look at Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villenueve’s upcoming Dune adaptation with a shot of Call Me By Your Name star Timothee Chalamet as protagonist Paul Atreides.
The above shot shows Atreides on his home planet of Caladan, as he prepares to embark on a journey to Arrakis, a scorched desert world and the only natural source of ‘spice’, the most valuable commodity in the known universe.
“The immediately appealing thing about Paul was the fact that in a story of such detail and scale and world-building, the protagonist is on an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts,” states Chalamet of his character, whose family contols Arrakis on behalf of the Emperor. “He thinks he’s going to be sort of a young general studying his father and his leadership of a fighting force before he comes of age, hopefully a decade later, or something like that.”

Vanity Fair promises to reveal more from Dune tomorrow, so hopefully more images and a first trailer are just around the corner…
A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
Dune is directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) and sees Timothee Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) leading the cast alongside Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Dave Bautista (Avengers: Infinity War), Stellan Skarsgard (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), Charlotte Rampling (Red Sparrow), Zendaya (Spider-Man: Far From Home), Javier Bardem (Loving Pablo), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Stephen Henderson (Fences), and Chang Chen (The Assassin).
