James Gunn, the writer/director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, has hinted that the third instalment will focus more on Rocket’s origin story.
During ComicBook.com’s recent Quarantine Watch Party of Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn was asked if Rocket’s past will play a major part in Vol.3 and while the director didn’t give a definitive yes, he teased the idea by saying it’s “a big part of what’s happening in the future.”
“I’ll just say Rocket is a big part of what’s happening in the future – and a lot of this stuff (like the scars we’re about to see on his back) sets up what I’ve been planning for Rocket all along,” Gunn said in a tweet.

In the comics, Rocket is the subject of torture experiments by a set of robot orderlies after being created as an animal companion for a patient on the planet Halfworld. Although it is currently unclear if Gunn will adopt this particular origin story, he has a plan to bring the beloved character full-circle.
