Netflix’s Extraction only debuted little over a week ago but is on track to become Netflix’s biggest ever original film launch, and so it will come as little surprise to learn that the Chris Hemsworth-led action feature is already receiving a sequel with screenwriter and co-producer Joe Russo confirmed to return to pen the script.
According to Deadline, Russo has closed the deal to write Extraction 2 but it currently remains unclear if the upcoming feature will serve as a sequel or prequel.
“The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be,” Russo said. “We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.”
It has not been confirmed if Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave will return to star and direct, respectively. However, Russo told Deadline that he is optimistic Hargrave will return to helm the project but won’t be approaching Hemsworth until the script is done.
