Having sorted out legal issues with Warner Bros. surrounding 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, director George Miller announced back in December that “there’s certainly another Mad Max [movie] coming down the pike” and now the filmmaker has confirmed the recent rumours that he’s prepping a Fury Road spinoff centred on Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa – albeit with a new actress in the lead role.
Speaking to The New York Times, Miller confirmed that the Furiosa spinoff will serve as a prequel set around 20 years prior to Fury Road, and that he is looking to cast an actress in her 20s to succeed Theron in the role, stating that: “For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don’t think we’re nearly there yet.”

These comments appear to validate a report from March claim that the filmmaker was meeting and auditioning potential actresses via Skype, which is said to have included The Witch and The New Mutants star Anya Taylor-Joy.
Miller is currently working on his latest film Three Thousand Years of Longing starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton, but it seems he’s eyeing Furiosa as his next project: “So, after we finish [Three Thousand Years of Longing], and hopefully everything settles down with the pandemic, we’ll see what the world allows us to do with Furiosa.”
