After weeks of speculation, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Disney is working on a live-action remake of their 1997 animated film Hercules.
Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo will serve as producers of the remake under their AGBO banner, but are reportedly not directing, while Dave Callaham, the writer behind The Expendables and the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will take on writing duties.
With Callaham’s action writing background, we can presumably expect the movie to take a more action-orientated tone compared to the original’s musical action-comedy route, though at the time of reporting, there is no word if they will remove the film’s iconic songs like Disney has done with the upcoming Mulan live-action remake.
The 1997 animated movie went for a musical fantasy route as it retold the Hercules legend in a modern-influenced and comedic way. Tate Donovan voiced the young demigod looking to his place in the world, while James Woods and Danny DeVito featured in the supporting cast.
