The Heroes in a Half-Shell look set for a return to the big screen, with Deadline reporting that Nickelodeon is teaming with Seth Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures to produce a CG-animated reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise.
The new film is being directed by Jeff Rowe (Gravity Falls) from a script by Brendan O’Brian (Neighbors: Sorority Rising), while Rogen is set to produce along with his Point Grey partners Evan Goldberg and James Weaver. It marks the first theatrical production from Nickelodeon Animation Studio, and becomes the second animated TMNT feature in the works after Netflix’s upcoming Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature.
“Adding Seth, Evan and James’ genius to the humor and action that’s already an integral part of TMNT is going to make this a next-level reinvention of the property,” said Brian Robbins, President, Kids & Family for ViacomCBS. “I’m looking forward to see what they do, and I know that Ramsey Naito and her team are excited to take the Nick Animation Studio into another great direction with their first-ever CG-animated theatrical.”
The new film won’t be the first time Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael have graced the big screen in CG animation, with a previous animated movie released by Warner Bros., which grossed $96 million worldwide. More recently, we’ve had two Michael Bay-produced live-action movies released in 2014 and 2016, which earned a combined $730 million despite being mauled by critics.
