Spider-Man may be facing off against a very familiar enemy in Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man 3 as The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Jamie Foxx will reprise his The Amazing Spider-Man 2 role as the villain Electro for the upcoming MCU sequel.
This is some pretty shocking (pun intended) news. Amazing Spider-Man 2 was not very well received by critics or fans, leading to an underperformance at the box compared to the first Amazing Spider-Man film as well as Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy.
The negative reception to Amazing Spider-Man 2 is partly what led Sony to reboot the character and make a deal with Marvel to share Spider-Man, allowing the web-slinger to be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Tom Holland replacing Andrew Garfield in the role.
Foxx won’t be the only actor to reprise a role from a previous Spider-Man film though. As the mid-credits scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home revealed, J.K. Simmons is returningas Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson, this type seem as a fiery web-journalist who reveals Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man to the world.
Beyond the return of Foxx and Simmons, not much else is known about the film though it was recently rumoured to be titled Spider-Man: Homesick.
Spider-Man 3 is slated for release in December 2021 and will see Homecoming and Far From Home director Jon Watts reuniting with cast members Tom Holland (Peter Parker), Zendaya (MJ), Jacon Batalon (Ned Leeds) and Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson).
