Fresh from Wonder Woman 1984 hitting theaters and HBO Max, director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot are officially returning for another outing with the iconic DC superhero.
Warner Bros. has confirmed that the duo will return to complete the trilogy in this franchise, with Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich delivering the news that Wonder Woman 3 is being fast-tracked into development.
“As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able continue her story with our real-life Wonder Women – Gal and Patty – who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy.”
It’s unclear at this point where Wonder Woman 3 falls in Gadot and Jenkins’ schedules, given that they are also set to reunite on Cleopatra for Paramount Pictures, while Jenkins was also recently announced as directing Star Wars: Rogue Squadron for Disney and Lucasfilm.
After beginning its international rollout earlier this month, Wonder Woman 1984 received a simultaneous HBO Max and theatrical release in the U.S. on Christmas Day, and grossed $16.7 million across the holiday weekend (with a further $19.4 million from 40 international markets, the sequel’s box office now stands at $85 million worldwide).
Having wasted little time in making the Wonder Woman 3 announcement, WarnerMedia is obviously very pleased with the film’s success on HBO Max, with the studio stating that “nearly half of the platform’s retail subscribers viewing the film on the day of its arrival, along with millions of wholesale subscribers who have access to HBO Max via a cable, wireless, or other partner services.”
“Wonder Woman 1984 broke records and exceeded our expectations across all of our key viewing and subscriber metrics in its first 24 hours on the service, and the interest and momentum we’re seeing indicates this will likely continue well beyond the weekend,” said Andy Forssell, Executive Vice President and General Manager, WarnerMedia Direct-to-Consumer. “During these very difficult times, it was nice to give families the option of enjoying this uplifting film at home, where theater viewing wasn’t an option.”
