Last summer it was announced that director Matt Reeves will expand the world of The Batman with an HBO Max spinoff series based around the Gotham City Police Department, and now the streamer’s chief content officer Casey Bloys has confirmed that the plan is to have characters cross over between the movie and TV show.
“That’s the idea,” said Bloys. “Matt Reeves is obviously a producer on Gotham City PD. We don’t want to reserve characters just for films or for TV. There should be kind of some fluidity between them. So that is the idea. I mean, we’re in very early stages on that. So I don’t want to suggest that any one character will be. But yes, that is, generally speaking, that is the idea, that there will be crossover.”
The Gotham City PD series will serve as a prequel to The Batman, taking place a year earlier than the movie, which is set during ‘Year Two’ of Bruce Wayne’s crimefighting career. Presumably the police reaction to the initial emergence of The Bat will factor into the show, but it remains to be seen how big of a role in will play in proceedings, or if we can expect Robert Pattinson’s Batman making an appearance himself.
The Batman sees Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse) donning the cape and cowl as Bruce Wayne/Batman alongside Zoe Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Paul Dano (Escape at Dannemora) as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro (The Big Lebowski) as Carmine Falcone, Alex Ferns (Chernobyl) as Commissioner Pete Savage, Con O’Neill (Ordinary Lies) as Chief Mackenzie Bock, Peter Sarsgaard (The Killing) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson and Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as Bella Real.
