Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions have tapped John Wick director Chad Stahelski to helm a big screen adaptation of the bestselling open world samurai action adventure video game Ghost of Tsushima.
Released this past July, the acclaimed game follows Jin Sakai, “a samurai warrior and the last surviving member of his clan, who has to set aside the traditions that have shaped him as a warrior to wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima.” It became Sony’s fastest-selling first party original IP on the PlayStation 4 over its first three days and has since shifted over 6.5 million copies.
“We’re excited to be partnering with Chad and 87Eleven Entertainment, to bring their vision of Jin’s story to the big screen,” said Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions. “We love working with creative partners like Chad, who have a passion for our games, ensuring we can create rich adaptations that will excite our fans and new audiences.”
Stahelski is currently preparing to shoot John Wick: Chapter 4, which was originally intended to shoot back-to-back with Chapter 5 although it emerged this week that those plans have now changed. Whether that means Stahelski will follow the next John Wick outing with Ghost of Tsushima – or one of the many other projects he has in the works (see Highlander, Kill or Be Killed, Arcana, Classified) – we shall have to wait and see.
