Having firmly established its credentials during a hugely successful awards season, Nomadland led the winners of the 93rd Academy Awards this Sunday with the film picking up the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director (Chloe Zhao) and Best Actress (Frances McDormand).
Zhao – who next directs Marvel’s cosmic superhero adventure Eternals – became the first woman of colour to receive the Oscar for Best Director, and only the second woman ever to be honoured in the category after The Hurt Locker’s Kathryn Bigelow. McDormand meanwhile takes her Best Actress tally to three wins from three nominations (second only to Katharine Hepburn on four wins from 12 nominations).
Other big winners include Anthony Hopkins as Best Actor for The Father, Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) and Yuh-jung Youn (Minari) in the Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories, Promising Young Woman and The Father for Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, and Disney-Pixar’s Soul for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score.
