First look at Kate Mulgrew’s Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy

April 7, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Paramount+ marked its First Contact Day Star Trek fan event with a number of goodies for fans of the sci-fi franchise, releasing trailers for season four of Star Trek: Discovery, season two of Star Trek: Picard, and season two of the animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks, the latter of which featured a guest appearance from Jonathan Frakes’ Will Riker.

Riker wasn’t the only Starfleet officer to get animated however, as we also got our very first look at Kate Mulgrew’s Kathryn Janeway from the upcoming Paramount+ and Nickelodeon series Star Trek: Prodigy!

Star Trek: Prodigy is the first Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences, and takes place in the year 2383, after the events of Star Trek: Voyager. Mulgrew will reprise her role as Janeway, with the character serving as the Star Trek: Prodigy starship’s built in emergency training hologram.

The official synopsis for the upcoming animated series reads:

Star Trek: Prodigy follows a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek Franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.

Star Trek: Prodigy will premiere its first 10-episode season later this year, and has already been renewed for a second season.
