HBO is sailing full speed ahead with another of its Game of Throne prequel spin-offs as Deadline reports that 10,000 Ships has gained Amanda Segel (Helstrom) as its lead writer.
The series will take place 1,000 years before Game of Thrones and follow “the journey made by warrior queen Princess Nymeria and the surviving members of the Rhoynars, who traveled from Essos to Dorne following their defeat by the Valyrian Freehold in the Second Spice War.”
Princess Nymeria is a legendary and mythical figure in Westeros culture. Dorne was not yet the kingdom it was during George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels and the Game of Thrones series, but instead was considered a poor land where its lords fought over rivers and land. When Nymeria married Lord Mors Martell, they fought a war to control and transform Dorne into one of the mightiest of the Seven Kingdoms, establishing House Martell as one of the royal houses with Nymeria sitting on the throne for decades. Her place in history is so significant that one thousand years later Arya Stark regarded her as one of her heroes and named her direwolf after the fabled princess.
Segel’s past work includes Person of Interest, The Good Wife and The Mist. As she joins the Game of Thrones franchise, HBO is developing several projects based on Martin’s work. They are currently filming House of the Dragon, a series focusing on a Targaryen civil war 200 years before the start of the series, as well as two potential series called 9 Voyages and Flea Bottom and an adaptation of Martin’s Dunk and Egg short stories.
