There are indeed no sad clowns at Warner Bros. right now. With a billion dollars at the box office and a few Oscar wins, a sequel to Joker was undoubtedly in the works. We’ve heard it for quite some time, but we now know how far along Joker 2 is in a new piece from The Hollywood Reporter.
According to a recent article focusing on several high-profile attorneys and their various deals, it has been revealed that Warner Bros. has signed original co-writer and director Todd Phillips to pen a sequel to the 2019 film. A few months back, reports has claimed that Phillips and Warner Bros. Pictures weren’t set on a direction for Joker 2. With this new story however, it seems like the project may be further along than anticipated

Some have expressed surprise by the fact that a sequel to Joker is on the way, either feeling that it takes away from the first film’s impact, or confused as to where to go next with the story. No matter what though, the powerhouse performance of Joker means the studio will be very eager for Joaquin Phoenix to reprise the role for another potential critical and commercial success – so much so that a report last year claimed the actor had been offered $50 million to return as the Clown Prince of Crime for not one but two follow-ups to the 80s-set origin tale.
