Another hero is joining the Spider-Family for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. As per The Hollywood Reporter, Issa Rae will join the voice cast as Jessica Drew, a.k.a. Spider-Woman.
The star of HBO’s Insecure is the first official new casting for the upcoming sequel to the Academy Award-winning first film. Rae will join Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld, who are reprising their roles of Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen, respectively.
Little is known about the plot as details are being kept under wraps currently. Rae’s Jessica Drew will likely enter the fold as another hero in whatever battle that Miles Morales’s Spider-Man must face. In the comics, Jessica Drew is the alter-ego of Spider-Woman. She was first introduced to comic readers in 1977 and joined the New Avengers roster in 2005.
Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson are directing the sequel. Peter Ramsey, one of the directors of the first movie, is returning as an executive producer.
Issa Rae is currently filming the fifth and final season of Insecure, and she was last seen in film for her 2020 action-comedy The Lovebirds with Kumail Nanjiani.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is scheduled for release on October 7th, 2022 and features the return of Shameik Moore as Miles Morales and Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy.
